DIY Patio Loungers with BEHR Paint

June 13, 2018~ Furniture DIY, Summer

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have been clamouring for a pair of patio loungers for ever. In every single one of our previous summer patios, I have lobbied hard to get some, but each time I’ve been stymied by lack of space, lack of resources, or lack of time. But not this summer! This summer, we teamed-up with BEHR Paint to try our hand at DIY Patio Loungers. And by we I mean Dan made them and I painted them.

*BEHR Paint sponsored this post, but all thoughts are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make PMQ for two possible.

This summer, treat yourself to some DIY Patio Loungers painted in a bright and colourful shade. Your yard, patio, or balcony can easily hold one and they're affordable to make. With the quality behind the BEHR name, you know the paint will hold up to anything you throw at it this summer.

Bruce, as always, was on hand to model the patio loungers once they were done, but before we get to those I thought I’d share the plans and how we got there.

We used // these plans from Ana White //. As always, her designs are simple, functional and affordable. For each lounger you’ll need:

Materials needed for DIY Patio Loungers
– 9 – 1×4 @ 8 feet long
– 1 – 1×2 @ 8 feet long
– 1 – 2×2 @ 8 feet long
– 1 – set of hinges less than 1 1/2″ wide
– 1 – set of 3″ hinges
– Wood Glue
– 1 1/4 inch screws
– 2 inch screws
– 1 1/4 inch finish nails
– 2 inch finish nails
* Ana’s list calls for pocket hole screws, but we didn’t use those.
All the instructions for the loungers are on her site, so I won’t replicate those here, but you can // find them on her site.//
Once they were complete and sanded, it was time to paint them! I didn’t think you guys needed footage of me painting (because let’s be honest, I do a lot of that around here).
I did however want to talk about the paint we used. You know how much I love BEHR paint for all things interiors (it’s the only paint I’ve used in our PMQ), but I thought I’d try out their line of exterior paint. If we were able to paint our Q, I would have, but since we can’t paint many of the walls I thought it might be perfect for the loungers. We’ve usually stained our outdoor creations (like with the potting bench and harvest table), but I wanted some colour with these, so BEHR was the perfect choice.

Their line of outdoor paint is available in the same colour range as all the interior paints, so it’s as simple as choosing your colour, finding the right base shade, and having them prepare it for you. When in doubt, just as the clerk at the paint counter for help.
I chose Lady Guinevere from the Marquee Line MQ1-13. It’s a funky take on pink, without being too bright, and a little masculine. Perfect for our already wood toned furniture, and the ideal accent for all the blue already in the space. Blue and pink are a match made in heaven afterall.

I grabbed two patio lounger cushions at Homesense, and used my already impressive arsenal of outdoor decor, to set the stage for the perfect little backyard retreat. I got the chance to enjoy them for a while yesterday before taking the photos, and man, they are perfect.

[…] Next let’s have a look and a DIY patio lounger. It’s a pretty simple thing to build and you can use the wood from a recycled pallet or some reclaimed boards if you have any leftover pieces from other projects. Building the frame is the most important and most challenging step and once you have that you can start adding the finishing touches and customizing the lounger. You can find all the details on pmqfortwo. […]
