DIY heart elbow patches are adorable, seasonal, and kind of an easy addition to any top or sweater. I’m kicking off a mini-series about Knit Sweater refashion ideas – because it’s cold, sweaters are expensive, and you do a lot of refashion old ones on your own.
You’ll know that I’m trying my hand at smaller, easier to do, hobbies and projects while June is young. Sewing is one of the things I’ve wanted to get better at, so I’m using little fashion DIYs to do just that.

What do you need to refashion some sweaters?
I recommend having a few essentials on hand: a fabric wheel, a cutting mat, a sewing machine, a few bobbins and threads (to match your sweaters), and any ribbons you may want to add.
I used my Fiskars tools because I have them on hand, but my sewing machine is something I bought on the Facebook marketplace for 20$ a few years ago.
DIY Heart Elbow Patches
Add cute little heart shaped elbow patches to any sweater, just in time in for Valentine’s day! or just because. It’s your sweater, do what you want. In addition to the sweater of your choice, and the tools mentioned above, I recommend some pink felt.
You can use fabrics for the heart, but I think felt is nice and simple, and super durable. Good enough for me.
I traced and cut two hearts out of a piece of felt. You can cut them as big or as small as you want, but mine are the size of the inside of my palm.
You can pin them in place on the sweater, or eye-ball it like I did. I then sewed them onto each elbow using my sewing machine.
When it’s done you’ll have an adorable sweater with DIY Heart elbow patches.
Can you spot my next knit sweater refashion idea in the shot below? Hint, it involves a fluted sleeve and a bow.
