Week 4 of the One Room Challenge hosted by Calling It Home is here! If you’re curious about what the official participants did last week you can catch their progress // here // and you can see what all of us guest participants did last week // here //. Okay okay, I know we said this week we’d be unveiling the last major project in the room but due to the weather, we had to flip the script a bit. What would the One Room Challenge be without an unforeseen issue and weather constraints? Instead, we’re going over our plan for the accessories this week! P.s forgive me for my use of gifs.
Catch-up on the One Room Challenge to date:
Week 4 – You are Here
But first! A slice of Life with the One Room Challenge Life – Because the One Room Challenge is intense, I could easily spend several hours a day at their place to get it all done in a timely manner, but that doesn’t really allow for the pace of life to continue around us. Instead we’ve opted to break the work into chunks on the weekend, with both Ainsley, Brendan, and myself working on things on our own time during the week. That means I can still put out posts and projects and they can still live a normal-ish life without crazy blogger deadlines.
Oh that’s right, they’re also under crazy deadlines with me too. But at least the workload is spread around a bit and no one project rests completely on one person’s shoulders… unless of course your name is Brendan in which case two projects are all on you.
We had planned to build and stain parts of the shelving this past weekend, but rain since Thursday has meant 100% humidity, and we all know that’s a nightmare for staining and sealing wood. That same weather pattern continues to loom over our plans this week. Things aren’t looking ideal, and we’ve had to break that process up into several smaller tasks over the course of the week. That means more work for Brendan. Womp womp.
Unless of course they want me in their driveway like a racoon at 2am tonight, staining the wood while I wait for the link party to go live.
Back to the business of accessories – If you remember our image board from Week 2, you can see that we’ve gone with primary colours for the decor: Blue, Red and some yellow. Why? Well, their simple, they work together, and they allow us to draw-in so many other colours on the wheel at a later date if need be. But do you remember our first accessory board? Well here’s an updated version!
That’s right – that beautiful image board is made possible because of our sponsors. I want to remind you of our amazing sponsors, without whom the One Room Challenge would not be possible.
*Society 6 provided the art for review, but all thoughts are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make PMQ for two possible.
*Wayfair provided the art for review, but all thoughts are my own. Thank you for supporting the brands that make PMQ for two possible.
Lighting was one of the first elements we considering the room, after paint. The existing light fixtures in the room (// week 2 //) were either from the house when they bought it, or hastily purchased at IKEA. Nothing “matched” and it wasn’t really what they envisioned if asked to describe their ideal family room.
When asked if Wayfair would be interested in patterning with us on the lighting in the room, we had originally envisioned getting a large chandelier or sorts. BUT, while poking around the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, I stumbled across some chandeliers that would do the trick for the space and free-up our Wayfair contribution for some sweet task-lighting.

I had thought of all kinds of cool and colourful lamps that would look great on either the built-ins or their sides tables, but Ainsley told me that Brendan had expressed an interest in a simpler, more structural lamp. With the new guidelines in mind, I found six awesome lighting options, and they chose the cool chrome ones.
The minute we added them everything started to feel more cohesive, like the room was starting to come together.
In terms of decor for the space we also partnered with Society 6. The helped-out with art in my master bedroom reveal //here// and I knew they had enough variety in their catalogue that we could all find a piece we agreed on for the room. At first I sent them the selection of 6 pieces below as framed, and then they selected something else, and neither of us were really happy with where this was going. I had been thinking of taking the room in a more Mountainy vibe with forest animals, but they were thinking more sea-side.

So on a whim I asked them what other pieces they were considering, and they sent me the link to the Nova Scotia print by Seaside Spirit. Ainsley and Brendan are both from Nova Scotia, so choosing a piece that reminded them of homes a no-brainer. We opted for the bright red vector frame to add a bold pop of colour (in addition to all the colour in the frame).
We hung it this weekend, just to get a feel for it in the space, and it looks amazing. It also contributed in no small part to the choice of plaids and seaside elements in the room. with a blue accent wall in a white room, the style options are pretty wide, so by choosing the maritime spirit direction we narrowed things down a little. It also led in no small part to chosing the plaid we did for the chair // week 3 //
We’ve also got the fireplace up on the wall, and are adding the shelves above it as we go. In the end, those won’t be stained, they’ll be left their natural colour.
Up next week: Built-ins, shelving, a picture rail and the fireplace – Building the big stuff for week 5. After that, THE REVEAL!
Girl working at someone else’s house under a time crunch would be hard because if you’ re like me you are working into the wee hours of the night sometimes, Good luck! Also I would like to hire that racoon to come to my house. I think he may do a better job sweeping than my kids!
I do like working into the wee hours! However only if it’s for something that doesn’t need to be photographed. I hate hallogen-lit photos so I often re-arrange my day to be able to photograph in natural light 😉
I’ll lend you my racoon if you send some of those D-lawless knobs and hooks my way!
Well mostly I’m working into the night so I can get things finished to photographed during the day. Now that I’m working, lunch hour photo shoots have become the norm. 😛
i love that artwork and love that it has meaning to them!
Thanks friend 🙂 Me too! Once they told me why, I was like “OH! Well we have to do this”
I love the artwork! It looks like it’s all going to come together really nicely – can’t wait to see!
Thanks Amanda 🙂
Dealing with weather is such a nuisance with any makeover. I hope this upcoming week will be more suitable! I can’t wait to see all the things you guys are building for next week’s reveal!
Isn’t it?!
Me too! I’ve getting my booty over there tomorrow morning to finally put the first coat of stain on. Wish me luck!
I’m really liking this so far, Ariel! Did you share the rug yet?
The rug is still currently rolled up and propped in a corner. Two small kids, a large hairy dog, and a cat don’t allow things to stay nice in our house for any length of time. We are saving it for the reveal!
Ainsley (aka the home owner)
what she said ????????
Thanks girl!
No rug yet 😉 We’re saving that for the reveal, because as Ainsley says, we want to keep it clean and fresh for the reveal photos!
You are very talented blogger, love the way you write and create your blog post its filled with humor! I love lights and the modern pieces are my favorite.
Maria
Aw thank you so much Maria <3 That means a lot!
mine too 😉 but this is their home, so it has to be stuff they love!
Those prints are just fab! Can’t wait to see more.
thanks girl!
I love the direction that the room is going so far. The art is so sweet. That baby deer is adorable. But I love the Nova Scotia one too.
I love that little deer! Although I’m stoked with the direction the Nova Scotia print takes us
I love that piece of art! Do they have them for all the provinces?! So a fun way to honor where you’re from (hubby would go nuts for a BC one!)
I’m not sure! I think this particular artist just does Nova scotia.
I found this one for BC though:

I really love where you’re going with this, can’t wait to see the whole room finished!
thanks friend 🙂 Me too!
Accessories and lighting look great, I love the boards you have put together.
Thanks Jillian!
I love the blue color choice and the lighting is awesome! Can’t wait to see the built ins come to life! This is my first ORC and I’m so inspired by all of you talented people! Oh and I got caught up in your diy halloween mirror! LOVE
Thank you Mysha 🙂 The blue was such a strong choice, and the fabric from the chair goes perfectly with it. The room is really coming together nicely!
Looking good! We are “weekend building” our built ins as well! Crazy busy!
I hope yours made it! Ours did 🙂
Oh my word, those PRINTS! Looovvvve!! These ORC projects look so hard, but so fun!
I even bought a few for myself too! 😉
love the artwork and that is has special meaning. we are doing most of our ORC room on the weekend, too! Can’t wait to see the full reveal!
Thanks Sarah! The closer we get to the reveals, the more excited I am to see everyone’s work!
SO many fun accessories! I can’t wait to see those built-ins next week!
I just finished the post – you’ll love ’em!
I love that NS print!!! So many happy summers spent there as a child and teen. Need to get that for our house!
Aww, I’m glad it brings up happy memories for other people too 🙂
I love the stuff you have picked here Ariel! So cool! pinning!
Thanks April 🙂
I’m loving all those accessories! They all look great together, and that red frame is perfect.
I hear ya on the weather thing. Last ORC I wanted to paint a nightstand for my son’s room. It’s still sitting in the garage waiting for paint. Not good.
Oh no! I would be mortified if I couldn’t finish everything in their home :S
I’m so glad that we’re at the styling and staging part now. The reveal is going to be awesome 🙂
Accessories are my favorite part. I can’t wait to see how you style it all.
me too 🙂 I think we’ve put the finishing touches on the space, so now it’s just about styling it!
LOVE the lighting you chose! Just beautiful accessories and prints too. I’m so excited to see this whole room!
Thanks 🙂 I would have taken it in a completely different direction, but I love that they’re choosing pieces that speak to them. The space will be so much more enjoyable that way.
I love all of the accessory, lighting and print choices!
Thanks friend 🙂
Your accessories board is incredible – very inspiring! I love the Nova Scotia print. I want one too! My parents are from Nova Scotia and we love it there. 🙂
Thank you! Would you believe that I managed to hit all the points I wanted to in actually putting the room together?
I can’t wait to see it! I do love the lamp they chose.
