DIY Gucci Inspired Tea Towels

February 26, 2018~ DIY and craft projects, sewing

This past summer I was totally obsessed with the Gucci denim jackets with all the bad ass patches // here //  and desperately wanted my own. The price tag was prohibitive though, so I went looking for some good DIY alternatives, and found a store on Etsy that sold all the patches I was looking for. Once they arrived though, I just wasn’t digging the combination once I saw them on my jacket, so I shelved them until something better came along. That brings us to yesterday afternoon when I was sitting in the studio trying to figure out what to make (because I knew I wanted to make something),and suddenly I started combining fabrics, and added the patches to the mix, and BOOM! – DIY Gucci Inspired Tea Towels were born.

Inspired by the hit runway fashion trend, these DIY Gucci Inspired Tea Towels are easier to make than you'd think! Grab some fun fabric prints and these affordable iron-on patches, and you're ready to go!

Step 1:  Cut and pin the fabrics to the size you want the towels to be. For this set, I chose narrower shapes because I envision using them in studio shoots and on the bar, so I don’t need them to be huge.

Step 2: Once you’ve pinned everything, start sewing. If you want to make these a cut above, you can line the back so that they’re double sided, but I’m cool with one-sided and a good hem.

Step 3: Using an iron, get rid of all the wrinkles on each towel, and pre-heat the area where you want to put each patch. Much like with iron-on vinyl, it helps if you heat the area first.

Once the area is warmed-up, apply the patch, and go over it with the iron on a high setting. Make sure you hit all the little strands and leaves, you don’t want them flying off!

Don’t forget to flip the towel and get the back! it will help with adhesion and make sure it all sticks.

Step 4: If you want to add a little pizzaz to the already #extra towels, using some tassels and pom poms to embellish. Note, they will make it harder to clean them, but it’s not the end of the world.

Step 5: You’re done! Repeat for as many towels as you want, and as many patches as you have. I made a set of 3, and can’t wait to use them in the studio!

What I love about these DIY Gucci Inspired Tea Towels is how unexpected they are, and how well they complement my bar collection and entertaining essentials. These aren’t your average tea towels, but goodness do they make a statement.

I love this project! I can’t sew at all whatsoever, but surely I can iron on some patches. 🙂

That’s exactly what iron-on seems and embroidery patches are for!

Right?! I love how good they look, and how sharp the colours and contrast are. Another one for the record books!

I adore this idea! Also, where could I find the teacups featured in these pics with the Indians, archery and animals? They would be perfect for my husband’s and my collection! Thanks 🙂

Ya know, I wouldn’t be able to tell ya! I found them in a thrift store! And there’s no china markings on them. I’m so sorry I can’t be of more help!
