As summer winds down (at least here), I wanted to share a project I’ve been puttering at for a few weeks on and off. How to build a deck on an uneven surface is actually easier than you’d think! I did it using the Multy Deck tread system in our chicken coop/ garage/potting bench area.

How to build a deck on an uneven surface

I don’t know about you, but I have a few areas on the property that are not super even, have the potential to become a mud pit, and in which we still need year-round safe access.

Why we used the Multy Deck system

I wanted to write this post for a few reasons: I love the easy to use Multy Deck tile system (I’ve used it twice so far), so many people have uneven areas that could still benefit from a deck, and with fall and winter ahead, if you have any areas that you need secure pathways in, this is for you.

When we used the Multy Deck system to build-out our balcony deck, the area needed excellent drainage, but at least it was straight and even. So installing the system made a lot of sense.

When I used it to make the base under her playhouse, it was because I wanted the area out of the mud and safe for her to use no matter the weather.

If you watched the video, you know how much the simple decking system changes the look and feel of the area. No more mud, no more uneven pavers, just a clean board look.

You can see some of the uneven pavers beneath. Over the years they’ve shifted and settled and are not super safe to walk on. The little decking squares make it safe again.

While I was at it, I cleaned-up the potting bench and added a few new things to make it suit the chickens.

You can see in the shot below, the boards (mounted in sets of 3) are not even, but neither is the ground below, so all this does it create a safer path for now.

I did some fancy cutting around the coop bases, but it all works and keeps the coop predator proof.

I also had fun with the chickens. Linda was not too pleased to be near a KFC bucket.

When you look towards the neighbours, we’ve got our regulation fencing, and created a little walkway in front of the coop so that we can easily get to the nesting boxes with ice and snow.

At the end, a little chair to sit and chat with the ladies when its closing time.
