Okay okay, I know we said this week we’d be unveiling the last major project in the room but due to the weather, we had to flip the script a bit. What would the One Room Challenge be without an unforeseen issue and weather constraints? Instead, we’re going over our plan for the accessories this week! P.s forgive me for my use of gifs.

But first! A slice of Life with the One Room Challenge Life – Because the One Room Challenge is intense, I could easily spend several hours a day at their place to get it all done in a timely manner, but that doesn’t really allow for the pace of life to continue around us. Instead we’ve opted to break the work into chunks on the weekend, with both Ainsley, Brendan, and myself working on things on our own time during the week. That means I can still put out posts and projects and they can still live a normal-ish life without crazy blogger deadlines.
Oh that’s right, they’re also under crazy deadlines with me too. But at least the workload is spread around a bit and no one project rests completely on one person’s shoulders… unless of course your name is Brendan in which case two projects are all on you.
We had planned to build and stain parts of the shelving this past weekend, but rain since Thursday has meant 100% humidity, and we all know that’s a nightmare for staining and sealing wood. That same weather pattern continues to loom over our plans this week. Things aren’t looking ideal, and we’ve had to break that process up into several smaller tasks over the course of the week. That means more work for Brendan. Womp womp.
Unless of course they want me in their driveway like a racoon at 2am tonight, staining the wood while I wait for the link party to go live.
Back to the business of accessories – If you remember our image board from Week 2, you can see that we’ve gone with primary colours for the decor: Blue, Red and some yellow. Why? Well, their simple, they work together, and they allow us to draw-in so many other colours on the wheel at a later date if need be. But do you remember our first accessory board? Well here’s an updated version!

Lighting was one of the first elements we considering the room, after paint. The existing light fixtures in the room (// week 2 //) were either from the house when they bought it, or hastily purchased at IKEA. Nothing “matched” and it wasn’t really what they envisioned if asked to describe their ideal family room.
When asked if Wayfair would be interested in patterning with us on the lighting in the room, we had originally envisioned getting a large chandelier or sorts. BUT, while poking around the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, I stumbled across some chandeliers that would do the trick for the space and free-up our Wayfair contribution for some sweet task-lighting.

I had thought of all kinds of cool and colourful lamps that would look great on either the built-ins or their sides tables, but Ainsley told me that Brendan had expressed an interest in a simpler, more structural lamp. With the new guidelines in mind, I found six awesome lighting options, and they chose the cool chrome ones.
The minute we added them everything started to feel more cohesive, like the room was starting to come together.
In terms of decor for the space we also partnered with Society 6. The helped-out with art in my master bedroom reveal //here// and I knew they had enough variety in their catalogue that we could all find a piece we agreed on for the room. At first I sent them the selection of 6 pieces below as framed, and then they selected something else, and neither of us were really happy with where this was going. I had been thinking of taking the room in a more Mountainy vibe with forest animals, but they were thinking more sea-side.

So on a whim I asked them what other pieces they were considering, and they sent me the link to the Nova Scotia print by Seaside Spirit. Ainsley and Brendan are both from Nova Scotia, so choosing a piece that reminded them of homes a no-brainer. We opted for the bright red vector frame to add a bold pop of colour (in addition to all the colour in the frame).
We hung it this weekend, just to get a feel for it in the space, and it looks amazing. It also contributed in no small part to the choice of plaids and seaside elements in the room. with a blue accent wall in a white room, the style options are pretty wide, so by choosing the maritime spirit direction we narrowed things down a little. It also led in no small part to chosing the plaid we did for the chair // week 3 //
We’ve also got the fireplace up on the wall, and are adding the shelves above it as we go. In the end, those won’t be stained, they’ll be left their natural colour.
