We’re Having A Baby!

You read that right. After many years of hormones, weight loss, and of course “trying” — we’re having a baby! I’m due at the end of August, and am now in my second Trimester so I’m cool telling everyone. This pregnancy was kind of a surprise for us, but after getting over our initial shock we were completely ecstatic.

You can read about my journey with PCOS & infertility here.

This is of course a huge change from what we expected to be our journey towards a family, and we are so pleased to finally be able to tell you guys!

We're having a baby! After years of trying, we are ready to celebrate our good news. Come see how we told family, and why we waited so long.

We found out on Christmas Eve Eve. Merry Christmas Dan! I couldn’t believe what I saw on the stick late at night, so I immediately showed it to Dan — who was absolutely not expecting to be handed a stick covered in pee at midnight. The morning of the 24th we rushed to confirm everything once the pharmacy opened, and they all came back positive.

We had family staying with us, and a trip to Mexico a few days away, so we kept everything between the two of us. Given our issues leading up to this point, we weren’t sure if this was going to mark the beginning of our journey with miscarriages (as Doctors said might happen) or if it was the real deal, so we wanted to wait it out as a couple before telling people. Week after week, milestone after milestone, it stuck! So we started planning how we were going to tell family, friends, and now you!

In New Brunswick (where we are currently posted), we are only entitled to ONE ultrasound at week 20. I know.

I wanted a dating ultrasound, and all the other ones that are common practice elsewhere in the country, so we found a way to get a referral for an ultrasound in Toronto around the 13 week mark. It would give us the chance to see this kid, tell our families in person, and make sure everything was still OK. We had only JUST heard the heartbeat at week 12, so the confirmations were coming fast and furious.

We don’t know the gender yet (that’s coming soon!) but we couldn’t pass up the pink poodle Jelly Cat stuffed animal, and this baby has already got a robust library. We haven’t bought many things yet — because we didn’t want to jinx anything — so now that we’re into the second trimester it’s full steam ahead! books! onesies! a few toys!

When it came time to figuring out how to tell our parents, we had originally planned on putting together a box full of clues that would be mailed to them. But when we found out we wouldn’t have an ultrasound picture to share in the box, we pivoted and decided that in person was best (at which point we would have an ultrasound picture). So we booked our appointments, travel, and got to scheming.

My parents knew we were coming, but they didn’t know why. Boy were they surprised on Thursday evening when we told them! Dan’s families had no clue we were even here until we surprised each family at dinner over this past weekend. We gave each family a few pictures and a letter board with a special message.

When it came to telling you guys, we wanted to make sure everyone who needed to know already knew, so you guys are the final piece in this happy puzzle!

I’m planning a post to answer any and all questions you may have, so I’ll open that up on Facebook and Instagram at some point this week. If you have any questions, watch for it!

In the meantime, thank you for hanging around, caring about my personal journey, and supporting me in all my endeavours!

This next year (who am I kidding, the next few) are going to be challenging from a business point of view, so I sincerely hope you’ll stick around and continue to help me grow.
