My baby turned two recently, and it feels like just yesterday that I was writing about her birth story and pumping into the wee hours of the night. To celebrate the occasion we threw her a Groovy birthday party in the yard. Complete with custom garlands, cupcake toppers, glitter and more.

Last year we hosted a kitty cats and rainbows party in the driveway of our last home, and it was pretty well put together for a driveway event, but I knew that I wanted to kick things up a notch this year with some bigger decor and more of a concept. It was time to flex my crafting muscles!
What are Fiskars Party Kits?
Did you know that Fiskars now has DIY party kits? You get everything you need to make a variety of party decor items, handily in a little box kit. I chose the party banner kit, the confetti kit, and the cake topper kit for birthdays, parties and holidays.
I’ve got a series of youtube videos that show you how to use each of them in depth, but for brevity I’ve also got simple photo tutorials.
Groovy Birthday Party Decor
I can’t tell you why, but I can tell you that I have wanted to throw a flower power party for a while, and this was my chance to do it! I built an inspiration board on Pinterest called June’s Groovy Party, so feel free to catch all my Inso there.
Mixing fake and real discounted flowers
In the florals, I mixed a variety of faux pieces with discount flowers from the store. They lasted exactly as long as I needed them to, and provided a bohemian look for a fraction of the price.
Making a party sign with vinyl and plywood
I wanted a big sign for the party, inspired by this one on Pinterest, but I added my own elements. The sign is made on plywood, so it will last. It will be the perfect addition to her playroom, and can be flipped over to use for another sign.
Giant Paper Flowers
These were a super simple addition to the party decor, and the type of old school party decor that never goes out of style. I used the non-stick scissors from Fiskars in a groovy tie-die pattern, to make the large flowers from card stock.
Paper Party Place Settings
I found the rainbow plates + napkins online, and once you add elements like the DIY cupcake topper, re-usable plastic cutlery, and a small pot of jam, you’ve got everything a toddler needs to make a complete mess – and one heck of a cute picture.
Sunglasses make the best party favors
I’m not into “loot bags” as we call them here in Canada, and I think sending kids home from a party with a whack of sugar is kind of bananas – enter the sunglasses.
I gave heart-shaped sunglasses to my baby shower guests, and I think this flows well as a gift. Outdoor parties call for hats and sunglasses (and SPF) so why not help out with one of the items. I bought them on Amazon in bundles of 12 and regret nothing!
DIY Party Banner
Using Fiskar’s Banner Creation Set, I made a banner that I strung up inside, so that when guests came in for food and the bathroom, the party decor would live on.
There were a variety of template shapes, but I opted for a traditional tag banner. I made the largest size and then used the remaining space on the piece of craft paper, to cut out a smaller size.
The hole punch made it easy to create clean lines on the letter cards, and then to string them together a consistent intervals using my Fiskars cutting mat.
DIY Cupcake Toppers
I’ve always been mesmerized by the lovely cakes and the complimentary toppers, but I’ve also always been turned off by the price. I absolutely respect the craft that goes into making them, but given that June will only eat one cupcake, its easier to call Betty Crocker and her friend Duncan Hines for help.

Fiskars Party Accent kit is simple to use, and you just need an ink pad, card stock, a glue stick, and toothpicks.
Start by applying your desired design to the ink pad, using the clear paddle, and then press it down onto the card stock to make as many stamps as you need.
Next, using the 1″ circle punch that comes in the kit, cut little circles of your design. Glue them onto the toothpick, and voila!
DIY Party Confetti
Using Fiskars Confetti Making Set, I made a variety of confetti to sprinkle around her party and on the table, in the flowers and so on..
The kit comes with 4 types of patterned punches, so it’s as simple as punching-out your designs on coloured card stock.
DIY Floral Balloon Garland
Using the non-stick scissors, I created giant daisies that I then stuck to the balloons in the garland using balloon glue dots. I added a few to her house for good measure.
Much like last year, I added a giant balloon kit above her MCM playhouse, and I’m 99% sure I’ll do this forever.
I even added one to the made-over cozy coupe car, and a few extras onto the house.
DIYing party decor
I love a good “Pinterest party” but I also love sticking to a budget, and using the Fiskars party kits allowed me to DIY a large portion of the decor that was involved in her party. Because most of it was paper I was also able to recycle it, or save it for next year.
