We moved into our new home on December 21st, and with 4 days before Christmas we made a mad dash to get a few key spaces set-up, and will be working on the rest of them casually over the next few months.
While we’ve spent the past 7 months in our rental planning and designing everything in our heads, the build process was complicated and ultimately frustrating. I won’t share more about it, but I WILL be sharing the mood board for the house, things you should consider while building, and any other lessons learned along the way. I know so many of you are interested in the build process, and I’ll do my best to share what I can.
New Home, New Style
In the meantime, I wanted to spell out a change that I think many of you have seen coming, but many haven’t. I’m changing up our home style, and it won’t be nearly as colourful as the last one.
Just as people’s personal fashion style changes and evolves, so does their interior style.
I’ve spoken at length about how and why I change up the look of some rooms “often,” and the same principles apply to our overall style. I need my decor and furnishings to work for us, not against us.
It pains me to write this, but all my tchockes and collections are a nightmare to manage around a curious toddler, and I’m tired of hiding them and cleaning them. I also want our house to feel like a home for our child, so I’m not going to make entire swaths of it “off limits” to her for the sake of “stuff.”
So here we are, pairing down some things, re-imagining what PMQ for two is about from a decor perspective, and living in our new home.
Transitional? Traditional? Eclectic?
Many of the choices we made for this home were done with re-sale in mind. I know it’s a frustrating thing to hear, but as I’ve always said, none of these homes are our forever homes, just home for now.
I’ve had this board on Pinterest for the entire process of the build (for the curious), and you can see where my head is at.
I do everything I can to make them ours, but we’re fated to move often, so I need to take that into consideration regularly. Our last home was a colourful tribute to the mid century home that its original owners had lovingly built and designed (and resided in) until they sold to us.
This new build is a chance to try something new, something daring, and something that fits in better with the market around us. We ARE in New Brunswick afterall, and not New York or Toronto.
Another factor: my own style has changed. I’ve spent the better part of 2.5 years wearing dark colours and crewnecks with leggings. Not exactly a caftan wearing free-spirit with marabou slippers. I was tired of feeling like a goth kid in my own home. This new home’s palette is a chance to not feel “out of place” or like I had to put on a shtick to do blogging content.
Don’t worry though, my caftans and weird decor aren’t going anywhere. They’ll just look a little different.
