In an effort to bring more home decor and design to the blog – not too much, just a little bit – I’m sharing my plans for the my office makeover! Spurred by the need to rethink the space and make it work for me a bit better, but also by the desire to finally finish the space and share it with you guys. After we moved it didn’t get much attention because it kind of turned into a holding room for all the odds and ends while things found their home. I then rolled straight into the One Room Challenge // here // and then the holidays. If you were a fly on the wall you’d have seen me scheming away on December 20th, putting together plans for my dream office; the time had finally come! *shakes fist in the air while lightning strikes in the distance*
Now, because we only have 2 bedrooms in this PMQ // here // and my office is currently one of them, when we have kids it will have to be converted into a nursery. As such, all my plans allow the space to transition later on. While it won’t happen anytime soon, I didn’t want to re-do this space only to re-do it a year later. I try to create spaces that will last for at least the duration of our stay in a given PMQ. Reasonable right?
That being said, I’ve had green on the brain for a while now. I think ever since we did the renter friendly built-ins in the family room // here // I’ve been interested in bringing more green into the house. I love all the rich, warm and pink hues we have in our home, but I think we need a bit more balance on the colour palette. It was to my greatest surprise and pleasure that Pantone announced a green as their colour of the year. While I won’t be doing that exact shade of green I am working with green!

And speaking of which, on the Pantone website they’ve got a list of colour palettes that compliment Greenery (colour of the year), and my new wall colour (Treetop) is in one them! Several of the recommended palettes also use colours that are already elsewhere in my home // here // like Rose Quartz, Calypso Coral, Serenity, Orion Blue, Winter Bloom.

All in all, this makeover should take me the better part of January, as things will arrive in stages. In my image boards I’ve included approximations for the spaces, as well as products in case you’re curious. And instead of doing a round-up of green things that are similar to Pantone’s colour, I’m looking at items that compliment the shade of green I’m using. The bedroom currently serving as my office does not have any rectangular walls. I have two half walls with a steeped ceiling, one wall with a big window in the middle, the other has the closet and the door. As it currently stands: everything except the ceiling is painted either green or pink. I’ll be painting everything that is currently green another shade of green, and painting everything that is pink a beautiful white! I want cleaner lines, more white space to make the ceilings seem higher, and to avoid creating a dark and small space.
Along one wall, I will create closed storage – finally! I’ve got four (4) pre-fab cupboards and will be doing to them what I did to our built-ins // here //. That is to say, raising them and adding a baseboard along the front, and then casing them with left-over mill work from Metrie. I’m hoping to cover the cupboards in a vinyl wallpaper to add pattern to them. I’m just not sure which one yet! Because the space eventually has to transition, there won’t be massive utilitarian shelving or peg boards, or even large paper dispensers for all my vinyl. Instead, I’m opting for “hidden away”, and “easily stored.” Things like my Cricut and my sewing machine will probably hang-out on top of the cupboards unless I can make enough room for them inside the cupboards.
Along the opposite wall I’ve got my desk. I used to have my desk back onto my window, which meant it occupied the middle of the room and I had crazy glare on the screen. With my desk out of the way, I now have a whack of space in the middle of the room for a craft table. I lucked out and found a small circular dining room table on Kijiji. It will double as a dining room for my future tablescape posts, and will also give me a dedicated craft table.
I’m adding curtains to the window, and will be able to better control the light now. They’ll be a big black and white buffalo check pattern, and I’m hoping to find a gold curtain rod to match the ones we have elsewhere in the house. I’ve also got some fun new accessories and textiles coming into the space, so expect a more mature and moodier space.
