A Halloween classic that I’ve come to love is Disney’s Skeleton Dance from the Silly Symphonies. So much so that I made a Skeleton Dance Cake Topper using some items from the craft store and Krylon Spray Paint. RUN, hop, skip and jig your way to the nearest one before they’re gone!

One of the best parts of Halloween was all the special programming that came on TV. Everything from the family channel Halloween movies, to the shorts on YTV, and then whatever faves you had on your family watch list.
That being said, the Skeleton Dance has capture my Halloween loving imagination, and spurred to me to create quite the scene!
How to Assemble A Skeleton Dance Cake Topper
OK so the skeleton picks you’ll find at the craft store (on clearance now!) will be made to look all spooky and grimy, but you know that’s not me. So I turned to my handy dandy Krylon spray paint in Ballet Slipper (gloss) to transform them.
For this you’ll also need painter’s tape, some foam (to hold them in while you spray paint them), and as many skeletons as you want (but I found 3 to be good)
Tape the picks, because they’ll be going into the cake, and you want them to be food safe. Insert them into the foam, and have at ‘er!
As with all spray painting projects, you should be in a well ventilated area (i.e outside). Spray the skeletons in a sweeping motion from about 20cm away. You don’t want to be so close that the paint drips down them.
Once they’re dry (a few hours later for sure, but ideally overnight), remove the tape carefully, and clean the pick before inserting into the cake.
Creating The Skeleton Dance Story
If you watch the youtube clip, you’ll see that it starts in a Church cemetery with a cat and some owls howling in the wind. And then before you know it, the skeletons have jumped out of their graves and are hoping around the graveyard set to a backdrop of tombstones and black cats.
I pulled the cat from a cupcake topper I bought for my Easy To Decorate Halloween Cupcakes, and used one here. I bought tombstones from the miniature section at my craft store, and dug into my Christmas decor to find a church ornament! While not everything made it to the cake, everything was displayed to create the story that I needed for the ultimate Skeleton Dance Cake Topper.
Before I added them to the cake, I made sure they all had the same pose. The last thing I needed was to topple the cake in the process of fiddling with them!
And now, before you ask – why are the skeletons pink? Because DUH! I love Pink, and I thought it was a cheeky tribute to the originals while still feeling like me. So if Pink isn’t your colour, grab any one of the others available in the Krylon Collection.
