DIY Kate Spade Flamingo Tote Bag

Straight up, Kate Spade has got me crushing. Have you seen her Pink Flamingo bag of the season? Well I have, and it’s adorable.

DIY Kate Spade Flamingo Tote Bag

This one is pretty simple to make, so I embellished a little and added some fun details to make it mine. I’d love to see what you do with yours if you make one for yourself.

What do you need to make a flamingo tote bag

Kunin Felt in pink, black, and any other pinks you can find.
Scissors
Hot Glue Gun
Pom Poms
Ribbon
Plastic Gemstones
Black Sharpie or fabric chalk

Using Felt to make a flamingo

The Kuning felt was really easy to work with, and it cut like a hot knife through butter. Fun fact: Kunin felts and fabrics are made in the U.S.A of Eco-Fi 100% polyester fiber, made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles. So if you’re someone who likes to indulge in a last minute soft drink, power drink, or even just bottle of water, this is a great way to make up for the plastic footprint eh?

How to make a DIY Flamingo Tote Bag

Trace the outline of the flamingo on the felt. I traced it facing one way, but when I cut it out I preferred it facing the other way so I flipped it.

Traced elements should include: the body, the neck/handle, the head, a wing, and as many feathers as you want.

Lay everything out to make sure it fits and works as planned. I had to do some last minute trimming to make sure it all worked perfectly.

Hot glue whatever gemstones into place. I used one for his eye, and one on each feather and one on the wing.

Hot glue the felt pieces into place. It is a layered look, so obviously you start with the body, add the neck, the face, and then the feathers and wing.

To hide the seam between the two panels for the neck, I decided to add a big black and white striped bow using leftover ribbon from my Spring Daisy Wreath.

I made the bow the way I make all my bows! Two loops that overlap and then the tails added on. It gives a very Col. Sanders look, but I find it looks cleaner.

I added the blue pom poms to make it look like my flamingo was sitting on water. I also added the great big green pom pom to the ribbon to cover-up my seems from gluing it together.
