DIY Fall Themed Plates

Okay, so I hadn’t planned on unveiling any fall decor until mid to late September, but it looks like I’ll get left behind by the rest of the blogosphere if I don’t! Can you believe it?! Some people had already done full fall decor before September 1st!

I’m starting slowly – considering it’s only Labour Day weekend – with a fun project: DIY fall themed plates for under $3/plate! Yay! it’s budget friendly!

Inspired by pointillism , fall shapes, and my love of plate walls, I gave myself a $10$ budget and got to work on my DIY fall themed plates!

Materials

  • Four white plates
  • Sharpies or porcelain markers
  • Leaves or cookie cutters
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Mod Podge Dishwasher sealent

Instructions

Step 1 – Clean the surface of whatever you’re drawing on (plate, bowl, cup, platter etc) with rubbing alcohol and let dry.

Step 2 – Draw the outline of your shape (leaf, cookie cutter etc.) by making small dots along the contour of the shape.

Step 3 – Start dotting the area around the contour in a densely packed manner, the further away from the shape you get, the less dots there should be.

Make sure you keep your dots uniform and avoid creating large blobs of dots by ensuring there is always some space between the dots. Otherwise you get some of the uglier blotches like in this photo below.

Step 4 (OPTIONAL) – add another shape or design like the plate below!

Step 5 – Wait until dry and seal with a spray-on sealant/dishwasher mod page. Unless you’re using alcohol ink pens, brushing any kind of sealant on will only smudge your hard work! If you used alcohol ink pens, then you seal with some mod podge!

Step 6 – Admire your DIY fall themed plates!

I can’t wait to hang my plates! Although I’ll probably have to set them up in our entryway, as the dining room and kitchen are already well served with some pretty funky plate walls of their own.

Don’t you just love these DIY fall themed plates?! What would you do for yours? Send me photos! I always love to see how you guys transform the projects.

Also, if you too are starting to look for fall decor you should definitely take a look at my Pinterest board for Halloween, Fall and Thanksgiving.
