THIS otomi clad piece of wonder is choc full of goodies – basically everything you need to throw a bitchin Cinco de Mayo party. This means it’s exactly what you need if you’re going to visit friends, or just want to get the party started at the office a bit earlier in the afternoon.

Materials for the Cinco de Mayo Party Box
- Wood Crate // here // or // here //
- Otomi Pattern Stencil
- Acrylic Paints – I used DecoArt’s Evergreen, Baby Blue, Silver Sage Green, Avocado Dip, True Ochre, Raspberry, Light Orchid, Scarlet.
Step 1: Give your crate a good wipe down, just make sure it’s clean and not covered in glue from a price tag, or dust from the store. I went with the medium sized one so that it would still be easy to carry once it was loaded up with goodies!
Step 2: Make your paint colour selection – I’ve listed mine above. Otomi patterns are bright and colourful, so make sure you pick colours that work for you!
Step 3: Star stenciing! This otomi pattern is big, so I had to tape it on the sides of the crate as I painted away. Like with all stenciling, you’re aiming for a dab instead of a brushstroke, so make sure you’re using the correct brushes to do so.
Step 4: I used different parts of the pattern around the crate. Each side is different, but still vibrant and colourful. It’s perfect!
Step 5: Once the crate is dry, it’s time to stock it full of goodies!

What does into a Cinco de Mayo Party Box
- DIY Ombre Margarita Classes
- Miniature Donkey Piñata
- Miniature Tequila Piñata
- Papel Picado Straws
- Cactus Candles
- Paper Plates + Napkins
- Tequila
- Corn Chips + Salsa
- Margarita Mix
- You can also add noise makers, a mixtape, a bigger piñata, and anything else you think is appropriate for your party!
As you can see, it’s full of goodies. If you were to pop by my place with a cinco de may party box I would have a hard time saying no! In fact, I’d probably have to send Dan on a corona run.
While you’re at it, grab a crate of your own and see what you can come up with! I’ve got a few more ideas planned, but I’m really happy with how my cinco de mayo party box turned out.
