Boob Light Hack

I hate the boob lights in our PMQ. This isn’t news to anyone. I think they make me look worse than the Winners’ change-room lighting. WHO NEEDS THAT?!?!

Recently, I purchased a beautiful ombre lamp-shade on sale at Target and thought about mounting it over the existing boob light in our bedroom. When I un-screwed the little bit on the dome, and I took off the glass bowl, I found myself with an amazing opportunity!

If you slide the bowl off, there is a bolt (on which the dome fits) and a washer (holding the dome in place) and a decorative nib for the outside.

Most lamp shades come with a mount to either go around the socket, or an extension above the bulb.

Materials

Drum shade

Box to hold existing lamp shape and part.

Step 1: Unscrew the nib below the glass dome. Be careful to hold the dome as you do! Once the nib is off, your dome may slide right off! (depending on whether the person who put it on, used the washer as a safeguard).

Step 3: Remove dome, and put out of sight, out of mind! You’ll need to put it back when you move

Step 4: Slide the lampshade up the length of the bolt to the desired heigh – keep in mind, the metal crossbars within the shade should not be touching any lightbulbs when secured.

Secure with the nob or washer that was keeping the dome in place.

It should like this from below when completed.

Step 5: Admire your beauty! I’ve used this trick in every home where ceiling height has allowed, and haven’t looked back since!

Optional step of adding opaque plexiglass to the bottom of the shade to help defuse the light and keep people from seeing the lightbulbs beneath. So far, no one has caused a stink about the setup since people are rarely standing right beneath them looking straight up.
