Don’t shoot! I have candy! Not just the bite sized ones, but full candy bars! I’m always the favourite house on the block come Halloween and now it’s because of my DIY Halloween doormat. I whipped this sucker-up in a New York Minute using a doormat I had purchased at Home Depot and some Americana Decor Outdoor Living i.e paint for outside that doesn’t wash away! I also love a good catch-phrase or saying, and I considered quite a few others before settling on this one.
**UPDATE: So this isn’t fun for me. BUT, it looks like in the process of creating this project I got a little too close to an existing work by Josie B. My work is in fact so similar that it’s essentially IP theft. I did not set-out to steal someone’s idea but through a confluence of Pinterest, the zeitgeist, and some laziness on my part, I infringed on someone’s IP. I deeply regret this. Having spoken with the store owner we are all good now, but I felt it was this was the right thing to do. In the world of blogging people don’t often own-up to IP theft, and facing the problems of Pinterest is something we all do on a daily basis. My apppolgies. p.s Go buy her doormats!**

FULL DISCLOSURE, I absolutely borrowed my saying from Shop Josie B’s mat // here // . It was too good to pass-up! So, if you’re not inclined to make your own (like me) you can buy one from her. Cool? I’ve been a Hocus Pocus fan for as long as I can remember, so when I saw a doormat with the saying on it, I knew exactly what we were talking about.
I also considered these other lines, so if this one doesn’t do it for you, feel free to take this image and crop it for the saying you do want!

- Sisal Doormat
- Americana Decor Outdoor Living Paint
- Craft Paint Roller
- Paint Brush
- Cricut Explore Air™ 2 machine
- Cricut® Cutting Mat Variety 3 pack
- Vinyl (to make a stencil with – find a big scrap!)
Step 1: Using your Cricut Explore Air 2, upload your saying of choice to the design space. If you need a refresher on how to do that you can visit my tutorial // here //
Step 2: Set the file to cut for the size you need. I opted for a larger cut and needed a 12 x 24″ mat to hold the vinyl needed.
Step 3: Weed the vinyl and prepare to place it on the mat.
Step 4: Take your time in entering the stencil on the mat. It will be a nightmare trying to unstick and replace it. Once it’s down, go over it a few times to make sure everything is stick down as much as it’ll go. The bristly nature of the mat will make it impossible to get excellent adhesion.
Step 5: Using the paint roller give a first pass at the stencil. Then, using a brush, go at the stencil in detail, making sure to get as much coverage as you can.
Step 6: Wait about 20 minutes for it to dry once you’re satisfied, and then remove the vinyl stencil in one fell swoop.
And there you have it! A DIY Halloween doormat sure to bring all the kids to your yard on Halloween. Kidding! Not kidding. Don’t light the black flame candle.
